Installing pavers costs more than most typical concrete options. When considering what product choices, you may wish to consider, it is wise to consider any existing paving nearby such as concrete driveways, concrete walkways or existing concrete patios. While there is nothing wrong with investing in a beautiful paver patio addition next to an existing concrete patio, you may find yourself wishing that you had removed that existing concrete patio and installed pavers instead. There are creative ways to blend pavers with an adjoining concrete feature which may include banding the outside perimeter of the existing concrete feature with the same new pavers. Keep in mind that you may wish to simply install the same paving product as what currently exists nearby and overlay pavers over both areas at a later date. For your paver brick project to last, it is vital that proper installation methods are followed. Most importantly is proper compaction of the subgrade along with the roadbase bed that will be installed just prior to the thin sand layer on top of which the pavers get set. Compaction of the subgrade should be performed ideally with a jumping jack compactor to ensure a thorough job. The roadbase should be installed in 3-4” lifts compacting each lift/layer thoroughly. Misting both the subgrade and roadbase with water aids in an excellent end result. Once the pavers are set in place polymeric sand is used to fill the joints. This product reduces the risk of weeds and ant activity. It is very important that when the polymeric sand is being vibrated into the joints with a plate compactor that the machine have a special cover over the plate portion in order to alleviate any scuffing or damage to the pavers.
